Decide what you want from online dating

Put your dating goals into words and find out whether your expectations fit.

Separate curiosity from expectations

Before writing your profile, decide what you would enjoy now: conversation, dates, a relationship or time to discover a connection. You do not need a permanent label. You do need to avoid promising a relationship simply because you think that is what someone wants to hear.

Be specific without making a checklist

Describe the kind of time you want to share. “I would like to meet someone for relaxed weekend dates” says more than “anything goes”. A person’s trans identity does not tell you their orientation, availability or preferred relationship. Read what they say about themselves.

Revisit the conversation together

Ask “What are you hoping to find here?” and listen without negotiating away a different answer. If your intentions change, explain that before making further plans. Different goals can be a reason to part politely; neither person has to agree to an arrangement that does not suit them.
